Retired Bishop Richard Hanifen of Colorado Springs celebrated Pentecost with us at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday June 7, 2014. I have a special connection with Bishop Hanifen. He ordained our class deacons in September 1982 at Moreau Seminary at the University of Notre Dame. He also welcomed Fr. LeRoy Clementich, CSC and me to serve at Sacred Heart in 1984.
Bishop Hanifen in his Pentecost homily reminded us that the Holy Spirit is about unity and that we should strive to be united especially with those who live on the margins of society, replacing the phrase, “the poor” with “our poor.” At 83 years old, Bishop Hanifen remains as vibrant and prayerful as ever. What a joy it was to celebrate the Eucharist with him for the first time in many years.

The rock of my ages
I entered the novitiate of the Congregation of Holy Cross in August of 1978 in Cascade, Colorado. It was my first experience living away from the Midwest. I loved the mighty beauty of the Rocky Mountains, the breathtaking views from the novitiate property and the smell of the many pine trees. I also found in the mountains and in my time in the yearlong program of prayer and discernment, a rich and deeper experience of God. I wanted to stay on the mountaintop forever. Continue reading
