Retired Bishop Richard Hanifen of Colorado Springs celebrated Pentecost with us at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday June 7, 2014. Bishop Hanifen and our parish also celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Congregation of Holy Cross serving in the Tri-Community. (Photo: Fr. Dew Gawrych, CSC, associate pastor, and Fr. Don Dilg, CSC, former administrator.)
I have a special connection with Bishop Hanifen. He ordained our class deacons in September 1982 at Moreau Seminary at the University of Notre Dame. He also welcomed Fr. LeRoy Clementich, CSC and me to serve at Sacred Heart in 1984.
Bishop Hanifen in his Pentecost homily reminded us that the Holy Spirit is about unity and that we should strive to be united especially with those who live on the margins of society, replacing the phrase, “the poor” with “our poor.” At 83 years old, Bishop Hanifen remains as vibrant and prayerful as ever. What a joy it was to celebrate the Eucharist with him for the first time in many years.
