On The Margins – Luke: 20:27-38

fr_ron_and_kbvm_readingBWListen to my weekly radio show, On the Margins. We know from Christ’s rising from the dead, we shall live with him for ever. The Sadducees were concerned with their earthly lives because they did not believe in the Resurrection. We shall all be one in the end in the Resurrection. How do we look at our entire live story in view of love? How do we see our lives, our entire lives in Resurrection? Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, November 10, 2013.

Fragments from The Word: Luke 19:1-10

These reflections are the leftover fragments from my homily at Sacred Heart this morning, Sunday November 3, 2013. Luke 19:1-10. The Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Fragments from The Word

Fragments from The Word

We all ache for a new perspective in life.

The young mother remembers her abuse as she overly controls her child.

She cannot breathe without feeling the abuse in her body.

She longs to see herself, her family and God with a new perspective.

A teenage boy gets his body pierced again so people will notice him.

He wants people to see him differently because he feels lost and invisible.

He wants to fit into whatever crowd will notice him. Continue reading →

On The Margins – Luke: 19:1-10

fr_ron_and_kbvm_readingBWListen to my weekly radio show, On the Margins. We are all searching for a new perspective in life. Zacchaeus had so many resources, yet there was something missing within him. He took to the streets and learned that Jesus was going to pass through. If he needed something in his life, he knew how to get it. He wanted to see Jesus. From his wealth and inner yearning, he climbs the tree. The tree becomes the cross of new perspective. Jesus wants to come to his house. Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time , November 3, 2013.

Homily helpers

I learned in my homiletics classes in graduate school to make sure I always received formal feedback on my Sunday homilies from designated members of the assembly. During my first few years after ordination, I asked a few members of the worshipping community in several different cities to write a critique of my homilies. At first, I was nervous about asking people to respond to my Sunday presentation. People were very grateful to be asked about their opinions and willingly took on this responsibility. Some of the people told me that was the first time they had ever been invited to participate in what they perceived was strictly a clerical privilege. Continue reading →

Year of Faith – November 2013

Painting by Don Vogl.

(This is the last of the fourteen month series)

Pope Benedict XVI  declared a Year of Faith to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vatican II. In celebration of this moment of renewal, I have written a retreat for each month beginning October 11, 2012 through November 24, 2013. This three minute audio retreat is meant to focus on some essential aspects of our faith and to invite us into prayer. I hope you will enjoy the audio version as well as the written text during this year. Please join me now for this fourteenth  month of reflection and retreat, “Our lives of gratitude”.

“Make a choice to be grateful for your life.”

Fragments from The Word: Luke 18:9-14

These reflections are the leftover fragments from my homily at Sacred Heart this morning. Sunday October 27, 2013. Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Luke 18:9-14.

Fragments from The Word

Fragments from The Word

I cringe when I hear the cries of vulnerable people.

I want to turn away when an old man first admits that he cannot remember his wife.

Or when a young mother tries to protect her three children from the brutal streets.

I sit in silence when a talented man explains to me he wants to take his own life.

I do not know what to do with myself when a father admits his infidelity and neglects his children who live in a car.

The cries of people in pain go straight to God. Continue reading →

On The Margins – Luke: 18:9-14

fr_ron_and_kbvm_readingBWListen to my weekly radio show, On the Margins. This gospel opens our desire for God. We cannot compare our lives to others. Comparison is the death of the spiritual life. We come to God with our own limitations and weaknesses. The grace of our lives is recognizing that we are exactly how God made us. We come to know that we are all the same in God’s love for us . Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time , October 27, 2013.
